2020 REFRIGERANT PHASE-OUT

What's the deal with the phase-out?

The government of Canada, along with several other countries, started its phase-out schedule for consumption and production of the HCFC-22 refrigerant (which is widely used in older air conditioners).

Almost all HCFC-22 refrigerants are no longer produced (99.5% to be exact). What does that mean for you? The answers to the questions below will surely be of good help.

FAQS

ARE ALL REFRIGERANTS BANNED SINCE JANUARY 2020?

As you may have heard, Canada agreed to diminish the production of HCFC in 2020. But not all home air conditioners and heat pumps will be affected. If your machine uses R-410a, you will not be affected by this. If your machine uses R-22, that's another story...

IF MY MACHINE USES HCFC-22, BUT SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE, DO I REALLY HAVE TO CHANGE IT?

Most air conditioners manufactured before 2010 use HCFC-22 refrigerant. If they are running properly, it is not mandatory to change such units. A little maintenance and you're good to go.

IF MY MACHINE USES HCFC-22 AND SEEMS TO BE WORKING POORLY, DOES IT HAVE TO BE CHANGED?

Every problem is different and needs to be assessed correctly. In other words, in some cases, it's okay to keep our old Betsy. In other cases, it may be recommended to replace the unit. It all depends on the problem you are experiencing.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH REFRIGERANT MY UNIT USES?

All the info concerning the type of refrigerant used by your unit will be written on the machine.  If it is written HCFC-22 ou R-22 in the refrigeration type category, your unit is using the old refrigerant.
